Satanic Temple in Canada

The Satanic Temple in Canada is challenging the Christian right. It's interesting to watch.

The Satanic Temple in Alberta, Ontario, and British Columbia remains committed to its mission despite Republican influence in the region. Each day seems to bring fresh initiatives from anti-abortion activists on the right, who cunningly strategize to undermine women’s rights to bodily autonomy. In addition to systematically closing down abortion clinics, Republican-controlled states are intensifying their legal efforts to essentially ban abortion pills, with Kansas and Idaho recently reigniting a campaign aimed at severely limiting access to mifepristone, a crucial medication in the abortion process.

In the midst of this oppressive environment, an unexpected ally may be emerging: Satan. To clarify, it’s not about literal devil worship; rather, it’s a call to arms from the Satanic Temple in Canada, an organization that champions individual freedoms. Founded in 2012, the Satanic Temple should not be mistaken for the distinctly different Church of Satan. Its mission revolves around challenging the religious right’s attempts to impose their beliefs on everyone else. Co-founder Lucien Greaves articulated the current situation succinctly, stating, “Right now, we have a minority religious theocratic movement so entrenched in politics that they are getting away with whatever they want.” Their work seeks to counteract these political machinations and advocate for freedom in the face of growing theocratic influence.

The Satanic Temple in Toronto

If there’s one thing that truly irks a Satanist, it’s ignorance. At the forefront of the The Satanic Temple in Toronto’s list of Nine Satanic Sins—which could just as easily be titled “The Annoyances That Drive Us Up the Wall”—stupidity reigns supreme. It’s a rather unfortunate circumstance when many of the queries that I felt compelled to pose to Warlock Marquis HK, a prominent spokesman for the Church of Satan in Toronto, unfortunately fell squarely into that category. For instance, the question “Do you really sacrifice, consume, or drink the blood of children and/or animals?” perfectly exemplified this frustrating tendency toward baseless assumptions.

Marquis, a multifaceted individual at 45, wears many hats: he is a talented musician, an insightful author, and a discerning magazine editor hailing from Vancouver. As one of approximately 2,500 practicing Satanists across Canada, he embodies the diverse community within this often-misunderstood belief system. His responses promise to shed light on the misconceptions surrounding Satanism, adding depth to the often sensationalized narratives that prevail in popular culture..

The Satanic Temple in Vancouver

During my mid-20s, I serendipitously discovered *The Satanic Temple Bible*, a thought-provoking work authored by the late Anton LaVey, a prominent figure known for his leadership in the Church of Satan. Instantly, I found a deep resonance within its pages that reflected my identity and aspirations. This text, rich in philosophical insight, encapsulated the essence of who I was and who I yearned to become.

The Satanic Temple branches in Vancouver and Quebec City embody a space for those who reject societal norms, offering a philosophy rooted in non-conformity. As self-identified Satanists, we embrace the status of outcasts, willingly distancing ourselves from the mainstream. Central to our beliefs is the conviction that each individual is their own deity, empowered to take full responsibility for their actions. There is no need to bow before or live in fear of external gods or entities; instead, we celebrate personal autonomy and the questioning of authority, including the narratives propagated in the media.

Compelled by this newfound ideology, I eagerly joined the ranks of others who shared my perspective, immersing myself in not only LaVey’s foundational texts but also a diverse array of literature that explored the application of Satanism in contemporary life. It became abundantly clear that this philosophy, characterized by rational self-interest and personal empowerment, was the path I was meant to follow. As I delved deeper, I felt a fervent passion ignite within me, illuminating the way forward.

In the vibrant community of the Satanic Temple in Edmonton and across Canada, I continue to engage with these ideals, always guided by LaVey’s pioneering spirit.
